Embrace the Beauty
This image was taken at the historic Benbow Inn in Garberville, California. Mary Oliver's, "Invitation", from Red Bird: Poems, is what comes to mind. Oh do you have time to linger for just a little while out of your busy and very important day for the goldfinches that have gathered in a field of thistles for a musical battle, to see who can sing the highest note, or the lowest, or the most expressive of mirth, or the most tender? Their strong, blunt beaks drink the air as they strive melodiously not for your sake and not for mine and not for the sake of winning but for sheer delight and gratitude-- believe us, they say, it is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in the broken world. I beg of you, do not walk by without pausing to attend to this rather ridiculous performance. It could mean something. It could mean everything. It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote: You must change your life. Yes, yes, yes … “it takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are.” EE Cummings is one of my favorite American poets whose precise, simple words inspire this humble spirit. My artistic interests are always developing so during an early encaustic techniques workshop, I returned home from the day, smelling of bees wax and feeling highly excited from working with the medium. I spent a couple of hours looking through magazines, books and other materials to pull together images to incorporate on substrates for the next day. The unfolding of this process is what I enjoy most. No set plans or ideas, only the mind’s eye leading me along. It’s an extremely versatile and fulfilling process. Several workshops later, this encaustic inspiration materialized; a visual reminder to remain strong, brave, tender, and whimsical.
I recently read that Hydrangea flowers are in tune with the 3rd Chakra, which is “the center of your self-esteem, your willpower, your self-discipline, as well as, warmth in your personality.” They are also a symbol of creating one’s destiny and how we respond to the winds of change in our lives. A couple of years ago, I made the leap of a lifetime out of a plane at 18,000 feet, harnessed with a tandem instructor. My heart was pounding as I slid towards the open door, the wind filling the plane’s cabin forcing me to clutch tightly to the sides to pull myself up. With my feet at the edge and facing the prop blast, I somehow heard the instructor’s “1, 2, 3 JUMP!” Without hesitation, I leapt into the sky. Freefalling at 120 mph, looking at the world upside down, there was no time to comprehend the sheer terror from what I was doing. With the help from my tandem instructor, who’s name I have forgotten, I found myself upright, releasing the parachute so I could calmly direct and ride the winds. The views were amazing as was the entire experience. Upon landing, with shaking legs and on an extreme Adrenaline rush, with the markings of the goggles imprinted around my eyes, I was excited and completely free. This was one of my bucket list items that I never really thought I’d ever do. Turns out it was a surprise gift that I was ill-prepared for, and only found out once I was at the airfield!! Rather than back out, I chose to go for it.
Hydrangeas have always been a favorite of mine. Beautiful reminders to grab life and live brightly. This past year I have made it a point to capture a daily image and never know what will present itself. Something or someone will pique my interest. Now that we are over half way through 2016, what I am seeing as a theme, is that visual messages randomly appear. This unfolding fern caught my eye, marking the moment of beginnings; a lovely pause at the threshold before the journey.
Have a beautiful day. “Life begets life. Energy creates energy. It is by spending oneself that one becomes rich.” Sarah Bernhardt When I was a child I was not allowed nor encouraged to play with paints or any sort of materials that would create messes. On a subconscious level this impacted my freedom of expression and took many years to overcome. I seriously believed that I did not know how to paint or draw. Talk about pinching one’s spirit. It is clear to me now, how my interest in photography began. It was safe, controlling and there are no messes, well outside of the darkroom! Once I learned to let go and allow, everything in my life transformed, even my images took on their own feel.
